While millions of volunteer soldiers mustered out at the end of the Civil War, many of the Army’s professional officers remained in the service and turned their attention to pacification of American Indian tribes in the West. This presentation will examine several of the so-called “Indian Wars” fought in the quarter-century following the Civil War and the roles played by many of America’s most famous Civil War veterans.
