Leaders & Legacies of the Civil War Online
The Battle of Mills Springs, January 1862
The battle of Mills Springs was fought in Wayne and Pulaski Counties, Kentucky, on January 19, 1862 (just nine days after James A. Garfield’s first battle at Middle Creek on Jan. 10). The Union victory ended an early Confederate offensive in eastern Kentucky. The Mill Springs battlefield recently became on the of the newest units of the National Park Service: Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument! Learn more about this lesser-known battle in 2021’s first “Leaders & Legacies” program! Speaker: Rebecca Hayward, James A. Garfield NHS.
