Leaders & Legacies of the Civil War: American Foreign Policy, 1861-98 In-Person

We naturally think of the Civil War as a domestic issue, but the United States still had to conduct foreign policy and diplomacy during the war.  How did the Civil War affect U.S. foreign policy from 1861-65, and what permanent changes to American diplomacy did the war initiate? This program will go all the way forward to America’s next major conflict after the Civil War: the 1898 Spanish-American War.

Speaker: Alan Gephardt, James A. Garfield NHS.
