In the second lecture in his history of the Supreme Court, Dr. John Foster of Mentor Public Library looks at the life and career of John M. Harlan, sometimes referred to as "the great dissenter." From his service in the Union Army during the Civil War to his 33 years as an associate justice on the Supreme Court, Harlan's life and work reflect the fundamental changes wrought on American life and law in the aftermath of the Civil War.
