Leaders & Legacies of the Civil War: The Emancipation Proclamation In-Person
On January 1, 1863, the Civil War officially became about more than just saving the Union. On this date, the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect, making abolition of slavery a Union war aim and also giving the North the authority to recruit Black men to serve in the United States Army and Navy.
