Lights Out Cleveland - A Collaboration in Migratory Bird Conservation, Research, and Awareness

Lights Out Cleveland - A Collaboration in Migratory Bird Conservation, Research, and Awareness In-Person

Every spring and fall millions of birds migrate through Ohio on the way between their breeding and overwintering grounds. Most species of songbirds migrate at night, and lights on tall buildings or aimed at the sky can disorient them and draw them into buildings. Exposure to reflective glass in urban centers can have devastating consequences.

Michelle Leighty, Collision Monitoring Leader from Lights Out Cleveland, will talk about bird monitoring and collection downtown. Dr. Andy Jones, Curator of Ornithology from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, will present research and findings that have resulted from the effort and what happens with the deceased birds. Tim Jasinski, Wildlife Rehabilitation Specialist from the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center, will speak about the rehab, release, and tracking of the birds that are collected and still alive.

The Lights Out Cleveland campaign is an innovative approach to bird conservation involving numerous organizations and community members dedicated to raising awareness and making Cleveland safer for birds.

This program will be held at the Headlands Community Center, located at 9096 Lake Overlook Drive, Mentor, OH 44060.

Library programs will be conducted in accordance with current state health and safety mandates/guidelines, which are subject to change. We encourage all attendees to observe these rules so that in-person programing may continue. We encourage masks at our programs and ask that family groups maintain social distance from other family groups. It is up to the individual to determine his or her level of comfort and acceptable risk when attending programs. If you are concerned about public gatherings, please do not attend.
