Though he would not describe himself as an abolitionist, James Garfield believed that slavery was a moral and political stain in the fabric of a nation concieved in liberty. He opposed slavery before and during the Civil War. He was an advocate for civil and political rights for those newly freed after the Union victory in 1865.
