The Vietnam Wars: War in Indochina, 1945 - 1954

The Vietnam Wars: War in Indochina, 1945 - 1954 Online

In the second lecture in his series The Wars in Vietnam, Dr. John Foster traces the history of the French war in Indochina, the direct precursor to the American conflict there. Starting with the defeat of Japan in 1945, the French government sought to reimpose colonial rule in Vietnam, but met fierce resistance from homegrown anti-colonial forces calling themselves the Viet Minh during Japanese occupation. This lecture will carry the story from the first French military engagement until their catastrophic defeat at Dien Bien Phu in May 1954.
