The Vietnam Wars: Vietnam and Europe, 1624 - 1945

The Vietnam Wars: Vietnam and Europe, 1624 - 1945 Online

This is the opening lecture in Dr. John Foster's 2021 lecture series: The Vietnam Wars

The first lecture looks at the long history of European colonialism in Vietnam. French involvement in Vietnam ran from the early 17th century until the 1950s and formed the backdrop to U.S. political and military involvement beginning in the early 1960s. This lecture will take the story from the arrival of the first Catholic missionaries until the defeat of French colonial forces by the Japanese in September 1940. Little known at the time that John F. Kennedy committed U.S. Marines to Vietnam in 1962, the long history of French involvement in Vietnam created institutions and forces that powerfully shaped the American experience.
