Tuesday Topics: The Great Storm of 1893 and the Riverside Online
REGISTRATION BEGINS SEPT 22, 2020.
Tells the story of the great October 1893 storm that sank many vessels on Lake Erie. In fact, this storm
was actually one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded, and it occurred in an unprecedented
year of hurricanes and damage to North America. One of the ships sunk was the 3-masted schooner
Riverside, which was lost with all hands while carrying a load of stone from Kelleys Island. In 2007 the
Cleveland Underwater Explorers (CLUE) located this shipwreck 25-30 miles off Cleveland, OH. The
wreck is a pristine example of a 19th-century schooner and is an outstanding Lake Erie shipwreck.
Photographs show how the wreck is preserved on the bottom today. Presented by Kevin Magee
