Monday University, The Sultan: Cleveland's Grindstone Wreck In-Person

Registration begins December 20, 2019. Due to a novice captain’s error in judgment, the brigantine Sultan foundered in Lake Erie after leaving Cleveland, Ohio, during a storm in 1864. As the sailing vessel came to rest in shallow water only a few miles from shore off Euclid, Ohio, six of the eight crewmembers climbed the rigging of the exposed masts in an effort to survive. One by one, however, they succumbed to the fury of the storm, leaving a sole survivor to be rescued and share the harrowing tale. The wreck was discovered in 2011 by the Cleveland Underwater Explorers (CLUE), and it is a beautifully preserved early sailing vessel with a unique and unusual cargo of grindstones scattered on its deck.
